DECREASING DIAMETER PIN DESIGN

On some of our archery sight pages, you may have noticed the mention of DDP technology. DDP stands for Decreasing Diameter Pins. This refers to the pin configuration in a multi-pin bow sight, starting with a larger diameter pin at the top of the sight and using smaller diameter pins toward the bottom of the sight. This is a patented feature exclusively for TRUGLO, Inc.

PIN SIZE

Most bow sights use the same size pin (fiber) diameter for all pins. .019 in. is common, but some sights feature .010 and .029 in. pins. Generally speaking, pin diameters are selected based on application. A larger pin is generally brighter and easier to see, especially in low-light scenarios. Smaller fiber diameter is more precise but may be a bit more difficult to see in low light. A smaller aiming point covers less of the target, making it easier to see exactly where you are aiming (to a hunter: “the middle of a deer’s lungs” rather than “the front half of the deer”). Like many things, the appropriate pin size in a bow sight comes down to “what are you going to use it for?” above other variables. A competition shooter or an archer shooting longer distances is probably most accurate with a smaller diameter pin. Generally, competitors are shooting somewhere with at least decent lighting, so increasing precision is a priority over increasing general visibility. On the other end, a hunter in a treestand is very likely to be shooting shorter distances under a thick tree canopy without a lot of ambient light; brightness in the last minutes of legal light is a priority over long-distance precision. This is why a sight like the PENDULUM comes with a seemingly large .029 in. fiber-optic pin.

WHAT’S THE ADVANTAGE OF DDP?

Instead of having to choose between “big bright pins for close range and low light” or “smaller, more precise pins for the longer range”, DDP combines both of these ideas, using smaller diameter fibers for increased precision on the bottom pins, and using larger diameter fiber-optics on the top pins. This creates a versatile sight picture that works well for how most bowhunters tend to shoot. We use DDP to describe this concept, not the specific fiber diameters. Some of our older sights included .029, .019, and .010 in. diameter pins. Many of our newer sights that incorporate additional technologies to increase brightness just use a combination of .019 and .010 in. pins in a DDP configuration.

MODELS

While DDP is a great advantage to many hunters, it is not for everyone. Some hunters find multiple pins sizes confusing or distracting. Hunters with strong astigmatism may have a bit more difficulty lining up pins of different sizes than pins of the same size. This is why we offer some sights with DDP and some without. In our current lineup, VEROS™ and HYPER•STRIKE™ use Decreasing Diameter PRO•BRITE™ pins, while the CARBON•HYBRID™, CARBON XTREME, and the STORM™ G2 use fiber-optic pins of the same diameter.

VEROS™ DDP

The VEROS™ bow sight is shown here. This is a good example of how DDP sights provide large, bright pins for closer distances and smaller more precise pins for longer distances (50 and 60 yards in the case of the photo to the right).

TRU•TOUCH™ SOFT-FEEL

Many of our archery products utilize a special process that we refer to as TRU•TOUCH™. This process involves the application of a proprietary coating on parts before assembly. Products treated with our TRU•TOUCH technical coating offer an improved user experience through a more comfortable feel and improved noise reduction and vibration damping.

A WARM FEELING

Many archery accessories are made from aluminum, which is a very good thermal conductor. This is why aluminum bows and aluminum accessories often feel cold to the touch. For its strength and weight, aluminum is a fantastic material but can be uncomfortable on those cold days in the treestand. The TRU•TOUCH coating provides an insulating barrier between your skin and the archery accessory. This coating allows us to use the same strong and lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum without the “cold to the touch” feeling that you would normally experience with other products made from the same material.

NOISE & VIBRATION REDUCTION

There is nothing quite as out of place in the woods as the metallic “tink” of bumping your sight or stabilizer and giving away your position. In addition to TRU•TOUCH being a good thermal insulator, it is also a great sound insulator. When you inevitably bump your sight against something in the stand or blind, TRU•TOUCH helps block that bright metallic sound, keeping things quiet and discreet.

As bow technology improves, bows are getting quieter and faster, but many set-ups may still have small amounts of rattle and vibration (Sometimes it is something as simple as a partially loose screw or an arrow that is not completely snapped into the quiver). Using products treated with our damping TRU•TOUCH coating can help reduce the noise and vibration on your bow. If you have significant amounts of noise and vibration, we recommend the use of other products to help tame the sound, such as one of our vibration-absorbing stabilizers or TRU•BLOCK string silencers. We hope you understand the advantages TRU•TOUCH provides. After all, can a bowhunter ever be too quiet? Good luck on your next hunt!

BOA® FIT SYSTEM

BOA® systems invented a pretty remarkable way to tighten just about anything that needs to be tough, durable, and user-friendly. BOA dial connectors are used on everything from boots, to snowboard bindings, to medical equipment, to advanced military combat helmets. TRUGLO partnered with BOA Systems many years ago, bringing this technology (and patenting it) to the world of archery wrist releases. The BOA connection system is superior to buckle and Velcro wrist strap designs. It is every bit as strong, but more comfortable and infinitely more adjustable. Especially important the like wrist straps are the easy one-hand adjustment; no more holding your wrist release in place against your chest, your thigh, or a table while you fiddle with the buckle. Just push the button and turn it to tighten until it is snug.

 Using the BOA® System

The BOA connection system allows for infinite adjustment, fitting shooters of all sizes and adapting to different clothing.

To loosen, pull outward on the BOA knob. It will “pop” into an unlocked position and freely open. To tighten, push inward on the BOA knob. It will “pop” into the locked position. Turning the knob clockwise will engage the ratcheting system and tighten the strap.

Do not disassemble, remove, or modify the BOA system. There are no user-serviceable parts inside.

MODELS

The NITRUS™ uses a stainless steel caliper style dual-jaw design, and is available with a solid stainless yoke connection or a flexible nylon strap. The DETONATOR™ has the same connection options, but is a single rotating hook design.  The ACTIVATOR™ is a mechanically simplified version of the NITRUS™ dual-caliper design, using only one moving jaw, and on flat not moving jaw. The SPEED•SHOT™ XS and SPEED•SHOT™ XS Jr. are great for beginning archers and shooters with smaller wrists. These are the most affordable way to get into the sport with a quality wrist release. These are offered with a hook and loop (Velcro) connection system, but of course can also be ordered with the BOA connection system.
